When is a safety data sheet review, update and revision needed?
A safety data sheet needs to be updated when the existing SDS no longer provides adequate, up-to-date and legislation-following information for the safe handling, use, storage, transport or placing on the market of the product.
Typical cases:
- the existing data sheet was prepared according to legislation that is no longer in force;
- a newer supplier SDS is available;
- the product’s composition or relevant information on one of its components has changed;
- the hazard classification or the related warning elements have changed;
- new occupational exposure limits or other national requirements have become applicable;
- the document contains formal or content-related errors or contradictions;
- labelling, PCN notification or other related compliance tasks can no longer safely rely on it.

What do we check during the safety data sheet review?
During the review and update, we check and modify, among other things, the following:
- the formal and content compliance of the safety data sheet according to the current SDS requirements;
- the mixture’s hazard classification according to the current CLP requirements;
- the IUPAC names and hazard classification of the components;
- the relevant H-statements and P statements;
- the mandatory SDS elements linked to the relevant hazard classification;
- the occupational exposure limits;
- the waste codes;
- the transport information, including ADR/RID classification and the UN number;
- the legal references in Section 15;
- the document’s internal logic, consistency and freedom from contradictions;
- general, inaccurate or professionally incorrect wording.
If the update is based on a newer supplier SDS in a foreign language, we incorporate the new information contained therein into the reviewed document, and we also correct earlier translation inaccuracies.
This is what distinguishes a genuine SDS review from a formal update. We do not simply carry over the fact of the changes; we also verify that after the modifications the entire document remains professionally correct, legislation-following and free from internal contradictions.

What data are needed for the review of a safety data sheet?
The review is based on the existing documentation and on any new information that may affect the content of the safety data sheet.
For an SDS update, we typically need the following:
- the existing safety data sheet;
- the newer supplier SDS, if available.
Optionally:
- updated component information;
- new physical and chemical properties, toxicological or ecotoxicological data, if available;
- relevant changes related to the use or placing on the market of the product.

When must a safety data sheet be updated?
A safety data sheet must be updated when new relevant information about the product becomes known, when the regulatory environment changes, when the classification changes, or when the document no longer complies with the applicable requirements for another reason. What happens if a newer supplier SDS is available?
We incorporate the information contained in the new document into the data sheet to be updated, but we do not adopt it mechanically: we review it professionally and adapt it to the requirements of the target country.
In which language can the update be requested?
We undertake SDS review and update in any official EU language, and if necessary we also translate the SDS into additional target languages as a separate service and correct its content according to the legislation of the target country.
How long does it take?
Under normal conditions, the completion deadline is specified in the quotation. In urgent cases, a rapid 72-hour deadline is also available.
What should be done after the updated SDS has been delivered?
According to the applicable legal obligations, the updated safety data sheet must be sent to those customers or downstream users who have been supplied with the product during the previous 12 months.
