Safety data sheet knowledge base – Label elements of the safety data sheet
In accordance with Annex II of Regulation (EU) No 2015/830 (28 May 2015) in Section 2.2 of a safety data sheets the following label elements are required:
- hazard pictogram(s)
- warning(s)
- hazard statement(s) and precautionary statement(s)
- supplemental information
A graphical reproduction of the full hazard pictogram in black and white or a graphical reproduction of the symbol only may be substituted for the colour pictogram provided in Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
Statements such as ‘non-toxic’, ‘non-harmful’, ‘non-polluting’, ‘ecological’ or any other statements indicating that the substance or mixture is not hazardous or any other statements that are inconsistent with the classification of that substance or mixture shall not appear on the label or packaging of any substance or mixture.
Obligatory label elements of the safety data sheet according to the CLP regulation
According to Article 17 of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures a substance or mixture classified as hazardous and contained in packaging shall bear a label including the following elements:
- The name, address and telephone number of the supplier(s)
- The nominal quantity of the substance or mixture in the package made available to the general public, unless this quantity is specified elsewhere on the package
- Product identifiers (name and identifier number of the substance, name of the mixture and the identity of all substances in the mixture that contribute to the classification of the mixture as to acute toxicity, skin corrosion or serious eye damage, germ cell mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, respiratory or skin sensitisation, specific target organ toxicity (STOT), or aspiration hazard)
- Where applicable, hazard pictograms
- Where applicable, signal words (Danger or Warning)
- Where applicable, hazard statements (H statements)
- Where applicable, the appropriate precautionary statements (P statements)
- Where applicable, a section for supplemental information
Section for supplemental information
Label elements resulting from the requirements provided for in other Community acts shall be placed in the section for supplemental information on the label.
Language of the label
The label shall be written in the official language(s) of the Member State(s) where the substance or mixture is placed on the market, unless the Member State(s) concerned provide(s) otherwise.
Suppliers may use more languages on their labels than those required by the Member States, provided that the same details appear in all languages used.
