General information regarding the safety data sheets


The sheet contains the phisical-chemical, toxicological and ecotoxicological properties of the substance or preparation, wich when used properly may appear as a risk factors. By the grounds of these properties the hazardous substences or preparations are to be classified. The properties with the biggest threath are to be indicated with symbols; from these and other risks arising from the hazardous properties information shall be given with risk indicator phrases (R-phrases), and suggestive phrases (S-phrases) for the necessary precautions for safe handling.


Hazardous substances/preparations should be classified in hazard classes:

  • physical-chemical properties (explosive, oxidising and flammable properties based on tests)
  • toxicological properties (the purpose is to take materials and preparations for acute, chronic or delayed effects into account, regardless of wether it is accused by a signle, repeated or long exposure)
  • specific effects on human health (carcinogenic, mutagenic, toxic for reproduction)
  • enviromental impacts (the purpose is to warn the user of the hazards of ecosystem from substances and preparations: acute and/or long-term effects on water systems and acute and/or long-term effects on non-water systems).

 

The layout and content of safety data sheet is provided by the appropriate legal background. The content of all headings of the safety data sheet must be accurate and consistent, so that the necessary health, safety and enviromental measurements for the professional users of the hazardous substance/preparation should be clear.


The information on safety data sheets should be described clearly and concisely.

The date of issue of the safety data sheet should appear on the first page. When the document is revised, the recipient of the changes should be notified.
